THE ARTHUR FINDLAY COLLEGE OCTOBER 2010 NEWSLETTER

MEDIUMSHIP OF THE BANG’S SISTERS
The following is a description extracted from Admiral W Unsworth Moore’s book ‘Glimpses
of the Next State’ published by Watts & Co, London in 1911, as to how the paintings were
obtained in his presence through the mediumship of the Banks Sisters of Chicago.
Two thin canvasses stretched on wooden frames and covered with thin paper were placed face
to face and held up in the window. The blind was drawn to the top of the canvasses and
curtains hung up in my presence on either side. The window has a southern aspect, and the
light coming in through the two semi-transparent canvasses is sufficient for the purposes of
taking notes and seeing everything that goes on. The small oak table was lengthways in the
window; the bottom of the canvasses rests upon it.
May Bangs sat on my right side facing me and pinching together with her right hand one side
of the canvasses. Lizzie Bangs sat on my left side facing me and pinching together the other
side of the canvasses with her left hand. I faced the middle of the canvasses, my nose being
between two feet and two feet six inches from them. After a few minutes the canvas assumed
various hues, rosy, blue and brown; it would become dark and light independently of the sun
being clouded or not.
On the morning of the 20th January 1909 went to the Bang Sisters for a profile portrait of Iola
as arranged on the 18th. Everything was ready at 10.50 and we sat until 11.30. I had in my
pocket a carte-de-visite of Iola taken in the year 1874. The mediums had never seen this or
any other photograph in my possession. Fifteen minutes after we sat in the window the face
and bust appeared; the profile was looking to the right, precisely the same aspect as it has
now, framed, hanging in my room. Remember, I was looking through the back of the picture,
and it was forming on the further side of that one of the two canvasses nearer to me;
consequently, had it gone on as it was and been finished, it would now (when framed) be
profile left.
When the portrait was nearly finished the two canvasses were lowered towards me on to the
table (the mediums being impressed, apparently to do this). A telegraphic came by taps to
May Bangs, who said: “She wants this picture for your wife specially, as well as for you. She
thinks that your wife would prefer to see her in the pose to which she is accustomed.” Up
went the canvasses again to the window, and I found that the whole picture was changed
round, so that the profile looked to the left instead of the right. In a few minutes the portrait
was completed, May Bangs remarking: “She says she cannot put in the hand.”
From the time the face and bust first appeared to the time the canvasses were separated and
the finished picture put on the sofa in the next room, twenty-five minutes had elapsed.
Neither of the psychics had ever seen the carte-de-visite in my pocket. How did they know
normally that there ought to be any hand in the picture? As a matter of fact, in this photo
there is a hand (the left) supporting the cheek on its left side? This was omitted in the
coloured picture.
When the portrait was finished, it bore a very close resemblance to the photograph. It was
looking in the same direction - to the right. As to likeness, it is impossible for anyone who
compares the photograph with the picture to deny that they are one and the same individual.
At the same time the picture is by no means a slavish copy of the photograph.

Its pose is more upright, the face
spirituelle, and the dress not exactly the
same. There is a firmness, a decision, and
an appearance of calm and contented
happiness in the face which is absent from
the carte-de-visite.
January 22nd 1909. Sat with the Bangs Sisters for a
portrait of Cleopatra.
As before two canvasses were produced, covered
with blank drawing paper, laid face to face, and
held up against the window, the bottom of the
canvasses, in this case, resting on the sill of the
window, as they were much larger in size than
those used for the two portraits of Iola.
I sat between the psychics, as on previous occasions, my eyes looking straight into the centre
of the canvasses from a distance of two feet to two feet six inches. We took our places at
10.55. About 11.05 the form began to appear, and it was roughly finished in ten minutes. We
were then directed, by taps on a slate, to put the canvases on the table and sit around it. We
moved the table to the centre of the room, placed the canvases flat upon it, covered them over
with the felt table cloth, and sat around as directed. At 11.30 we were informed that the
picture could be raised; the canvases were now separated and the picture put on a sofa in a
neighbouring drawing-room.
In all precipitations through the mediumship of the Bangs Sisters the picture is found to be on
the further side of the canvas which is next to the sitter. The stuff of which the picture is
composed is damp, and rubs off at the slightest touch, like soot. Notwithstanding this, the
paper on the canvas furthest from the sitter is unsoiled. The picture, while in process, can be
seen clearly through the back of the canvas; but of course it presents the reverse aspect to that
when it is framed - left arm for the right, and so forth.
The portrait of Cleopatra is practically the same now as it was when it was lifted from the
table. Afterwards, but not while I was looking at it, the colours deepened a little, flowers
were added to the embroidery of the dress, a ring was put on the finger of the left hand, and
the picture acquired a general appearance of greater richness and finish. It was hanging in the
lecture-room of the London Spiritualistic Alliance for four months, and it is therefore
unnecessary to describe it.
It cannot be called a work of high art; the dress is stiff, and the anatomical features are
deficient; but it is undoubtedly a representation of an Egyptian queen, and, considering the
way in which it was done, a fine example of spirit power.
This a remarkable tribute to the Campbell Brothers,
“Spirit Artists of Lily Dale, New York”,
Oil painting on slate of flowers/

The séance took place in Salford, Manchester, about 1901. The picture was painted by spirit
precipitation “before a full audience in good gaslight on a penny slate bought at Abel
Heywood’s shop.” The time taken was two minutes and was witnessed by Mrs W A Herring

Celtic Blessing

An old Irish blessing, author unknown.

May the blessing of light be on you, light without and light within.
May the blessed sunlight shine upon you and warm your heart till it glows,
Like a great peat fire, so that the stranger may come
and warm himself at it, as well as the friend.
And may the light shine out of the eyes of you,
like a candle set in the windows of a house,
Bidding the wanderer to come in out of the storm.
And may the blessing of the rain be on you -- the soft sweet rain.
May it fall upon your spirit so that all the little flowers may spring up,
And shed their sweetness on the air.
And may the blessing of the great rains be on you,
that they beat upon your spirit and wash it fair and clean,
and leave there many a shining pool, and sometimes a star.
And may the blessing of the earth be on you -- the great round earth;
May you ever have a kindly greeting for people you pass
as you are going along the roads.
And now may the Lord bless you, and bless you kindly.

Sorry Dad for being the one you never wanted,
The one who is always there.
Sorry for being the one that's left behind,
The one that never departed.

Never doing nothing,
There to disappoint,
To remind you of another,
The one who always could.

For failing in the simple things,
You'll never understand,
That given all the time to give,
I'd always fuck it up.

But you'll never understand
The pain you leave me with,
With every bitter word you say;
and every word's your last.

Would you ever shed a tear,
Think of me, if one day
It is I who has said his last?
Would you think of what we missed?

What could have been?
Should have been.
Never was

A normal days banking

How on earth can you justify your actions on the 12th February? - please could someone look at our account on this day the money was there!
This is shocking treatment. I am not impressed.

Message: Thank you for your message.

I have reviewed your account and the charges you refer to have been applied correctly, and as a result of insufficient funds being available in your account on that particular day. Please be advised that cash transferred electronically will not become available until the next banking day. I would like to apologise if this was not made clear to you in the past.

I appreciate your concern and I'm aware that overall, your account is run well. As a gesture of goodwill, on this occasion, I have arranged for your account to receive a refund of £32.00. Please be advised that any future charges of this nature will stand.

I trust that the information provided prevents this issue from occurring in the future.

Regards

Please remember: Quoting your account number in the subject field or within the body of your message will enable us to handle your query more efficiently.

You have done it to my account again.
I do a same day transfer because I can see that the next days available balance is over the overdraft - all should be OK but the next day I log on you have bounced cheques, charged me £32 but received the previous days payment - it is like you have made this decision that I have insufficient funds in advance even though I respond immediately I am aware...it just does not seem fair. It is as though I am powerless to rectify!

When cheques are presented cleared funds need to be in your account on the day of presentation.

I'm reminded of the Little Britain catchphrase - 'Computer says No!'
I am disappointed that same day transfers actually cannot be used to correct any minor irregularities.
But then I am human and computers don't make errors.
Plus I guess bankers bonuses need to be paid from somewhere.
If only there was some way flexibility could be built into your computerised system and it could see further than that instant because money was going into to the account from more than one place.
I just do not accept that your current non human system is in the least bit fair on your customers ...but then I guess 'Computer says NO!'

Message: Thank you for your message.

I refer to my previous message sent on 16/2/10 regarding the same problem.

Cleared funds need to be available to pay any items presented on that day.

Please see section 8.6 of the Terms and Condition of your account as follows:

'If You do not have enough money in Your Account (including available money within an
Overdraft Limit if you have an Overdraft), at the start of the day to cover the payments
that are being made that day We may refuse to make a payment out of Your Account. If We refuse to allow a payment to go through, You will incur the relevant fees.'

I note the word 'may' - surely that implies an element of fairness should be expected? When funds are transferred the instant the situation is spotted ie on that day, to bounce cheques totally £37 and applying a £32 penalty seems that whoever interprets the word 'may' is having a laugh at my and presumably other customers expense

Message: Thank you for your comments.

An element of fairness was applied when I refunded your account on 16/2/10 under similar circumstances.

However I have taken you comments on board and decided on this occasion to refund £32.00 but I must advise you no more refunds will be given for any charges raised correctly under these circumstances.

Regards

Thank You for crediting but nevertheless to say that no further credits when and if a similar situation arises would imply that that you are affectively changing the terms of our contract by removing the would 'may' altogether.
As such you are removing an issue of discretion and fairness from any decision thereby making you terms and condition 'unfair'.
Legally this falls under Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977.

Message: The word 'may' is there as it is down to our discretion as to whether or not to charge. You have now been refunded twice and are now aware of the reasons why you were charged, which is why there will be no more refunds under those particular circumstances.

This doesn't mean to say you will not be refunded for any other reason.

Chris Conway walks out on Most Haunted!

http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/
Quote:
I'd like to start by thanking you guys for all the love and support you have given me since the start of my Most Haunted adventure :-) However, I feel I can no longer continue as Most Haunted resident medium. I appreciate the chance given to me to work in television and I plan to continue to do so in some other show.

I had the decision to make between fame/money V's My beliefs and principles. I won't go into details but I couldn't be a part of something I didn't trust. Too many things were happening contrary to what I was picking up or at times picking up no spirit activity at all.

I thought it wrong to agree with the fans criticisms of the show while picking up a pay cheque from Antix Productions. I feel that we were either the luckiest paranormal investigation group in the world or the tapping’s, stone throwing etc wasn't paranormal. This is of course my opinion and is in no way any accusation of fraud on my part. My decision was made for me when I realised that on receiving my call sheet on a Friday the venue was being written on it for this series. I am strongly against any advanced knowledge of where I’m investigating (unless it is made clear I know). I opened the files and looked up my hotel whilst having to ignore the rest of my call sheet. This meant I felt like I wasn’t fully involved.

I also feel that I wasn’t involved enough in the actual investigations. If I didn’t manage to pick up all the information in the first 15 minutes I’d lost my chance. Even bringing stuff through at the hub wasn’t being aired. This I felt was not fair on myself or the fans.
http://chrisconwaymedium.com/

Chris Conway / Most Haunted

From http://chrisconwaymedium.com/

I was legally gagged then attacked on a public forum by the person responsible for gagging me. This smacks of double standards. For the moment I am removing this gag to respond to these allegations.

"Firstly his contract finished on the last ‘Live: Series’ shoot, I am more than happy to publish this contract on the net."

I have never denied my contract finished. It ended after EVERY series and Live. You want to publish my private contract on the net? Yet you have the cheek to cry because I have an opinion about your show.

"He was never asked to be a part of Prague and it is this that has obviously started his negative responses. He was sent a courtesy email on 01.02.10, along with everyone else, informing of the rough dates that the live may fall on. He was never offered a position on it, as shortly after the email was sent we decided to use alternative people in that role. No other correspondence was sent or given and no inclusion in the live was offered or inferred. The fact that we have been obtaining the services of other individuals for some time will become all too clear on the live. Any comment to the contrary is a lie."

I think anyone seeing the look of disgust, suspision, and uneasiness on my face would know I wasn't planning on staying. If you were indeed trying to replace me behind my back without having the decency to tell me this says more about you than me.

"We have never held the locations a secret on live shows, as with the very nature of the show, these things get out anyway - and we have never hidden the fact. If the alleged medium uses any information prior to a shoot for their own advantage, then that is only fraud on their behalf and a complete loss of trust with everyone they work with, we can only trust them - we can’t control them."

I beg to differ. I was never told the locations for the 8 faces of evil Live. Are you trying to say that I have committed fraud? I am an intelligent, degree qualified man. It may only be a 2:2 combined honours degree (which, before you say, I know is the lowest degree about and wasn't a good mark. However, this degree was made up of various subjects. One was history, world war 2, but the point is I could have, with prior knowledge of the location, found out every name, date, and story about the place. Put simply I could have come across as the greatest medium to walk the earth. However, I am no fake and chose not to use this knowledge. I still wonder why I was told it though without the public being told.

"I am not going to go into the reasons why we decided not to use Chris as I feel that it wouldn’t be professional to do so."

Glad to see you have kept your sense of humour :-)

"Save to say that if anyone goes to Lincoln Prison, have a look at the first room on the right where you shall see all of the information given out as ‘psychic’ on the show written for all to see. That is fact and something which no-one, even you believers out there, can deny."

The point is I already knew where I was going. I wouldn't have needed a name on a wall to commit fraud. I could have researched it but I didn't or I'd have impressed more by having lots of names dates etc. However, I have to ask. If you believed I was committing fraud why did you, live on air, not say? Why did you go along with it. Why were you actually affected by this name on the wall? I am not saying you committed fraud by these acts. I am merely curious.

"We are all shocked and saddened at the things being said by someone that we plucked from obscurity, showed nothing but respect and kindness to, and have given a platform to launch their career. He isn’t the first to show such dishonour and sadly I’m sure he won’t be the last."

You were too kind in this altruistic act of kindness sir. respect and kindness? I won't reply to that. Ask yourself why am I not the first to show such dishonour?

Blessings

Chris

Ghosts and Legends of Lincoln Cathedral

Lincoln Cathedral is a gothic 11th Century building that is Lincolnshire most famous landmark. In 2005 the interior was used in the filming of ‘The Da Vinci Code’; and doubled as Westminster Abbey.

High in the Angel Choir, the Lincoln Imp can be seen leering down from a pillar.
There are many legends about how he came to be, one of the best known concerns Remigius, a Benedictine monk who was appointed by William the Conqueror to oversee the largest diocese in the kingdom which extended from the River Thames northwards to the Humber. In 1072 the bishopric was moved from Dorchester in Oxfordshire to Lincoln and work began on a new cathedral. As the stone masons worked and chipped away at the oolite limestone blocks the work caught the evil eye of the Devil himself.
The holy building was erected on high ground and could be seen from miles around. This only served to anger the Devil and as the day of consecration approached the Devil gathered hordes of his imps to attack the site. The workers fled but brave Remigius held his ground and prayed to the Virgin Mary for deliverance. A mighty gale ensued and one of the imps were violently thrown back. One of the imps, possibly Satan himself, sought refuge in the cathedral and as he flew around this holy building his body turned to stone and has remained there ever since.

Another version is that in the 14th century the Devil sent forth two imps to cause mischief throughout England. At Lincoln cathedral they overturned pews and furniture, tripped up the bishop and headed for the Angel Choir. It was there that an Angel appeared who ordered them to stop. One ran away but the other decided to throw rocks at the Angel and was instantly turned to stone.

The Cloisters is the haunt of a procession of spectral, praying monks.

On the steps a monk like figure has been seen on the steps who turns and wander back through the door.

A ghostly horn sounding is thought to be the playing of Bishop Robert Bloet, the 2ND Bishop of the Cathedral.

In 1964 some children claimed to see a white mass, in the form of white lightening flash from the central tower to the ground.

In March 1976 a witness reported a human head rolling and bouncing down the hill from the cathedral.

Re-enactments of those who have thrown themselves from the cathedral spires and towers have been reported.

A 17TH century cleric been witnessed by three nurses walking up Greestone Stairs at the East End of the cathedral who vanished through a solid stone wall near the archway.

In the early 1990s at Greestone Place, a young woman sensed the atmosphere become cold and she observed a woman dressed in either a nurses or nuns clothing, holding what looked like a baby, float several inches off the ground. She drifted into Greestone Terrace and disappeared. It is possible that the ‘nurse’ may be linked to nearby Tithe Barn which had once been a hospital at one time.

Marianne Williamson's quote

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate,
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We as ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world.
There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won't feel unsure around you.
We were born to manifest the glory of God that is within us.
It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.
As we let our light Light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
